New Friend, Meeting the mission President, update

Hi all,
So I met with Elder(President) Cordon yesterday.
He was very pleasant.
He was quite happy to get to know all about me and asked about my talents, experiences, background, musical, language abilities, and education.

I may be asked to teach TESOL English with Chinese people, which I think would be fun.

I also do the follow-up referrals for the missionaries.

I know how to work the front desk at the Library now.

I may also get to attend a Chinese ward/branch. Which could be really fun, I don't know yet where I will be assigned for a church. I will keep you posted.

I am slowly getting my apartment put together. I assembled my IKEA shelves yesterday which is way helpful. I added a mattress topper from Costco which helped tremendously in my sleep and overall much less stiffness when I got up this morning.

I met my neighbors finally. Some sisters who work at the visitor's center. One is from Venezuela and the other from Utah I think.

They had a seniors movie night last night but I missed it because I was late getting back from Costco.
They watched the"Other side of Heaven". We apparently have a monthly potluck dinner and also an FHE on Monday night to study "Come follow me" together. I will enjoy that interaction. I was able to attend the Tuesday night institute class on the New Testament which was very enlightening. It is taught over at the visitors center.

Otherwise, I slept 12 hours yesterday, there is a lot to take in but I can do it at my own pace.

I was copying my family tree over from Family search to Ancestory.com the other day four generations at a time with one click. Anyway, it kept adding and adding, I was beyond amazed how many more relatives were added in and how far back it went back!

Some of the dates were 1100's and some 900's and even one line went back to 230 Ad.
How accurate it is, I do not know. However, I did find some royalty and some Vikings and more German ancestors.

All pretty interesting. I look forward to learning more on how to help others. I met our Chinese specialist researcher. She volunteers regulalry. I was able to ask her to give me tips on some local Chinese restaurants. So I went to dim sum with a fellow attendee from our Family search conferences. IT was soooo good. I found dishes that are normally only made in China. It was way yummy. I was quite happy with the food and the reasonable prices.

I will post some pictures later as they are on my phone, anyway I need to get back to finishing the referral text messages to the missionaries . I was given some more time today to finish getting settled in my apartment. Usually as of now my pday will be on Wed. However because of the training on Tue and Wed, I had one yesterday. They are giving me today too to get moved in. My boxes arrived from Utah so I am anxious to get unpacked, organized and settled.

 These are all the binders of information I need to learn and absorb. Wish I could do it by osmosis and just sleep on them.  LOL

I met Estreniah in the library a few months ago. We got talking, about life. I was helping her with the family search for a bit. She is nanny here, and it was her night off.  She had majored in Sociology and me in psych. We both love kids and had a lot to talk about. She sent part of her later life in foster care. So someday she wants to be a foster parent too. Which lead to our discussion about the challenge of raising children who have experienced early trauma. I introduced her to another Sister to help her. A few days later she came again with more questions. This time the questions were about the church.      We are only allowed to answer questions about family history and bear a brief testimony about why we do family history work, I did just that.  We are not allowed to proselytize in the Library.  We want people to feel comfortable coming here.  Since she still had more questions I introduced her to the younger Sister missionaries  ...

October already?!

Hi All, I was excited today to find out that the gift I made my good friend Fran actually arrived on her birthday today. I made it with Mixbooks, similar to Shutterfly publishing app. Usually, I use chatbooks.com but I wanted to do some colorful pages. It turned out well. I combed her and her children's facebook pages to find photos to add to the ones that I already had. It made up a nice book. She was thrilled as was I at her reaction. Ok so let me catch you up... This week on Monday, Sept. 30th  I prepared food, etc from 10 until 4 with help from others.  We had about 44 people for dinner, 30 ish new missionaries coming in, along with four sisters from Nauvoo (who will serve here for six months), and a new senior couple from Hawaii. Brother and Sister K, who are Japanese and very delightful. Oct 1st, Tuesday I also worked in the library and helped with food prep from 10-2. We were feeding thirteen outgoing missionaries and mission office staff. the men...

A thank you note

The night before heading down to the Newport Beach temple, I had had my windows open, I was up late because I was having a hard time getting comfortable in my bed. My neck was stiff so I was heating up a heating pad. I heard a truck pull up and looked out my kitchen window to see a fire. ambulance type vehicle there. COncerned (Because we have many older patrons staying here at times) I decided to go and see if they needed any help. like a ride to the hospital for instance. It was 12:45 am I was pretty sure I was the only one awake, Since our apt complex is pretty mucha U shape it was easy for me to spot from the hallway balcony where the paramedics were. It turned out to be a single gal here who had suddenly been hit with either food poisoning or the violent flu. She was dizzy and sweating and ran to the bathroom to relieve herself using both toilet and garbage can. When she tried to get up, she passed out and hit her head on the side of the tub.
