A busy week learning new things and teaching my first mini class
Hi All,
This has been a busy week as Tuesday and Wednesday I was in training all day.
I just finished the intermediate class for Family Search. We learned some things like cutting, pasting, uploading information into our family search, how to capture images and attach them to people's records in Family search. We learned more about how to use Ancestry and some of the cool features that it has.
We also learned how to find obituaries and various newspaper items. Some of these items are only accessible from the Library's computers. Anyway I managed to stay awake for most of the class. It helped that we had several different teachers who did more hands on training and helped us practice finding certain information. I have been meeting and getting to know some of other Missionaries serving in the Library here. All very interesting people from all over.
I also have connected with some of the younger sisters here. Many from Asian countries and others from South America. I told them I am claiming them as extra daughters. We give hugs when we see each other. They are sweet young ladies and they have come and helped me finish unpacking and organizing my stuff which has been great. In return I have done some altering or mending for them. They usually drop by and visit for a little bit a few times a week. I enjoy seeing them and I imagine they are a little homesick. It is fun to hear about their country and growing up experiences.
Tuesday afternoon the AP's saw me ( Younger missionary assistant's to the mission President )
In any event they told me that President Cordon thought I was a really good at teaching English as a second language. They said he wanted me to teach a class in teaching English class at zone conference on Thursday and Friday. So Wednesday I scrambled to pull together a handout for the class. I took the best tips from the "English First" lesson manual and also added some of my own.
I learned some things from when I took my TESOL training in 2007.
Plus I have had some really great teachers over the years, whose methods I found very successful.
As I was pondering how I would teach the class to make it fun, interesting and useful a thought came to me, to teach it in a different language. This was so surprising the more I though about the idea to teach it almost completely in German, the better I liked it.
I could demonstrate to the group, the techniques that I wanted to teach them. I wanted the missionaries to experience what it would feel like to not know the language
So as they came in (I taught three 20 minute sessions) I began greeting them in German. At first they looked confused, and they thought maybe the came to the wrong class. However they caught on quickly and played along. We covered "how are you", and I taught them options how to answer.
We also covered teaching them how to introduce themselves, (Mind you this was all done in German with gestures, motions, facial expressions, acting out etc.)
I then handed them various objects and we learned the German vocabulary . After that I had them identify them in German. Then passed them around they would tell the person next to them what it was they were giving them. I had them ask for certain objects including candy. When I then asked them is they wanted some candy they figured out quickly that Ja versus Nein got them some candy to eat. We also talked about colors and then I asked what colors certain objects were. Then I would ask them for certain colored objects or an object. I had the German vocabulary written on the board. That way I could point to it as a reminder of the words. I wrote it out in a structure so they could see the word order and then add in the noun..
They picked up on the vocabulary very quickly, even though I spoke completely in German.
We then discussed body parts and we even sang the song " head, shoulders, knees and toes". They got a kick out of it. I described another song with pictures and gestures to help them understand the words. Then I taught them an additional (unfamiliar German child's folk) song.
The last few minutes I spoke English and gave them the handouts that I prepared for them.
They all said that they understood what I was conveying. Some were even able to remember some of the vocabulary. We talked briefly about how much they learned in just 15 minutes. They all said this was the best class of the three classes that they attended and were all pretty excited to try some of the techniques in their English classes. Yesterday ( it is now Friday) I had three students in each class session. Today I had a huge group in the first session and a huge group in the third session. Sister Cordon actually came to the second session. So I gave her an overview. She is working on improving her English and I, my Spanish.
My outcome. I would have done them on my sewing machine but I knew I would be gone at zone conference and then the library till 9 pm.
According to family search (where you can see which relative you look like the most) I look 44 percent like my grandmother who I was named after. My middle name is her first name.
Me with my new short haircut . For $28 I figured I had better make it last. I asked her to cut off one inch it was more like 3'. Oh well it will grow out.
This is the latest scaffolding to gold leaf Moroni's horn. I noticed a plane flying by so I snapped a picture for contrast.
ok more later!

See above.That was his attempt.
So I helped him out and mended three pairs of pants for him while sitting in zone conference the other day.
I also finished this skirt alteration for a young sister . It was way too long on her.
If you see the upper right corner when you first log into family search you will see a there are a lot of interactive activities that are fun to do.
ok more later!
